In my family there runs a tradition where my Great-Grandmother gave my mother her wedding ring. My mom was really attached to her grandma when before she died my mom was with her  and my Great-Grandmother told her to have her wedding ring. Since then my mom will not take off the ring for anything. That ring will go to the eldest from my siblings and so forth.
