Riddick Family Bible
The object for my presentation is the Riddick family bible. This bible has been in my family since the early 1700s, it traces the births, deaths and weddings of every family member since around 1730. This bible connects to my family and identity through my grandmother on my fathers side of my family, her name is Lou Riddick and she is the daughter of Bessie Alton Riddick and Joseph Norman Riddick. Joseph Norman Riddick’s great grandfather was Joseph Alton Riddick who was born in 1735 in Perquimanis county, North Carolina. Joseph Alton Riddick was a general in the Revolutionary War, after the war he served as the North Carolinian speaker of the Senate and he helped ratify the U.S. constitution. Joseph Alton Riddick is a direct line descendant of captain John White who was the founder of the lost colony Roanoke and settled what is Perquimanis county. During Joseph Alton Riddick’s tenure in the North Carolina state Senate he helped successfully defeat both the Virginia and Kentucky state resolutions that were drafted by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison which argued that the 1798 alien and sedition act was unconstitutional and the states would not enforce. Today, parts of my family still live in Perquimanis county and surrounding counties. This bible has been passed all the way down to my grandmother, aunt, and uncle, who still are in possession of it to this day.
