Quilts
These are two quilts that have been or will be passed down to me through the two sides of my family. The purple quilt, made over 51 years ago, is from my fathers moms side of the family. Made by my great-great aunt Carrie, then passed down to my great aunt Debbie and then passed down to me. The white quilt, currently on my mothers bed, is from my mothers moms side of the family. It was made by my great grandmother Boots, who owned her own textile store and handmade this exact quilt. This quilt was passed down to my mother and will eventually be passed down to me. These are both family heirlooms that will be passed down for as many generations as there are to come. It connects my family because quilts are made with a desire to protect and keep their family warm, it shows the way my family cares for each other. The culture that these quilts represent is a very southern culture. In the south, textiles are a huge industry and a part of many peoples lives, specifically in the 1900’s. This really shows my families American culture because two totally separate sides of my family participated in a similar livelihood which goes to show what a lot of people in the south, specifically women did with their time/for their job.
