The medal was given to my great grandfather during World War 2. The purple heart was given to him because he was taken captive and managed to survive and escape the prison. My great grandfather was very brave and he passed that down to my grandfather. My grandfather was also in the military for many years and now my brother is in the navy. My family's story is unique because not very many people are awarded a purple heart. My story is similar to others because it involves the writer not knowing about a relative and judging them based on the stories that have been passed down through their family.
