Puerto Rican Flag
The Puerto Rican Flag is an important artifact to me because it represents when my parents migrated from Puerto Rico to America. They both migrated separately and then eventually met each other in school, where they became a couple (never married, though). Then, they had me on November 14, 2008. The flag shows that we as a family will continue our tradition and show why we love being Puerto Rican. We eat foods that are common in Puerto Rican culture, like rice and beans, pastelillos, and tostones. We also go to the annual Puerto Rican Day parade to meet other people in our culture and to have some fun. Currently, both of my sisters are also teaching me how to dance salsa for future parties and prom. Finally, the Puerto Rican flag gives me the motivation to learn about my culture and where I come from. Hopefully, either in my senior year of high school or in my time out of school I can learn Spanish. I know it is not required that I learn Spanish, but I still think that to fully experience and enjoy my culture I need to learn Spanish.
