Prayer Mat
From a young age I was taught about Islam. I was taught to pray but I didn’t know the meaning behind it. I did it because I was obligated to. Once I got older I actually chose to pray on a prayer mat because it brings me peace and I enjoy it. This time it was my choice to want to follow Islam. I began to get excited everytime I picked my prayer mat. I would watch my family pray together and now I’m one of them praying together. The prayer mat reminds me of my family and me bonding.
In New York City you can pray in public on your prayer mat without being judged. When me and my family are outside we feel very comfortable to pray out in public because we know the first amendment in the constitution protects peoples freedom of religion. There’s so much diversity in New York City. No matter your religion or race, people accepts you. Also in alot of NYC school there’s prayer room. NYC is about inclusivity and accepting all people. I’m lucky enough to be able to pray whenever and wherever, which some people doesn’t have the opportunity to do in other countries. The prayer mat shows the amount of freedom we have to be able to practice our belief.
