This was my paternal grandparents’ Bible, written in Portuguese, from January 6th, 1962. They would have been in their late twenties or early thirties at the time of receiving this. They were missionaries for the Church of God, a pentecostal Christian sect. My grandfather also pastored Churches throughout his lifetime. Although they served in many places, they did a lot of their work in Brazil and converted many Catholics to their denomination. Because of the nature of their jobs, my dad and his siblings spent their childhoods moving between Brazil, the United States, and other places like Uruguay. My ancestors came to America many generations ago and we have no Brazillian heritage, but my dad and his siblings were influenced by Brazillian culture because they spent many of their formative years immersed in it (for example, they all speak Portuguese and enjoy Brazillian food.) This shows how even people whose ancestors have been in America for a long time can still adapt parts of other cultures with exposure, even though Brazillian culture hasn’t really been passed down to me or my first cousins.
