Pink Pegasus.
The artifact that is important to me is my small pink pegasus toy. My first grade teacher, Ms. Albanese gave me the toy. I thought I had won the lottery. Half the class was getting a toy or trinket from the class treasure box as well. Once, I babysat my younger cousins who saw the toy sitting on my dresser and wanted to play with it.
According to the NYC Division of Planning, about 37.5% in NYC are foreign born. Circling back to Ms. Albanese, I remember one day, when she told us that she arrived in NYC in the 2000s because she had to leave Poland with her family due to many hardships similar to my Dad’s immigration story here, he too was searching to escape the hardships of rural village Pakistan. The toy reminds me of Ms Albanese, and the others who have strived and struggled to come to this country with nothing on their back but a dream and hope. To you, it's just a toy but to me its representation of the hardship and what America is; a melting pot of diversity.
