Picture of Great-Grandpa
This is a photo of my Great-grandfather, Mike, that was taken in 1972 in my Grandparent's kitchen in Canarsie. I spent many days and nights at my grandparent's. My aunt, uncle, and cousins lived upstairs so you can say I grew up in that house even though we moved out when I was about 3 or 4 after my mom remarried.
That's me, at 2 years old and my mother in the background at 19 years old. I'm guessing it was one of his visits to New York because, at that time, he lived in Columbia. I would say it was around late winter or early spring because of our attire; possibly Easter. He always dressed in a suit or something impressive. That was old school Italian style, but he would come back to New York once every few years during a holiday so I think it was for Easter.
He was from Bari, Italy, and immigrated to New York when he was a pre-teen or teen. That would have been about 1910 to 1915. I'm not exactly sure. Then, after my Great Grandma died around 1969 or so, he went to Puerto Rico, then to Columbia, married again to a woman 43 years his younger, and had a couple more kids before returning to New York in 1982 with the Columbian side of the family. So, I have one great aunt who is my age and one who is 44 along with my three aunts and grandfather from his first marriage. We're not sure, but we have a good inkling that we have relatives in Puerto Rico as well. Yes, Great-Grandpa Mike loved a good story, a good song, a good party, and WOMEN. He surely loved women. Not surprisingly, he was Italian.
