El Viaje Que Cambio Todo
This immigration story is about my mom, Angeles Hidalgo. She was born in Nuevo Urecho, Mexico. She was 22 when she immigrated from Mexico to the United States. When she did, she went with my father and his uncle on a plane to the border. She landed in Juarez, and from there she went on a truck as she was smuggled into the USA. Throughout this entire thing, my mother was pregnant with me and eventually when she arrived in Denver, Colorado. A year later, she had my sister and we moved to California. The photo that accompanies this is a picture of my mom when she was young. In this photo, she was standing in front of a car with my dad as they were next to my grandmother’s house. My mother loved her culture so when she had to leave for the United States, she remembered some of the cooking and is now teaching me how to cook Mexican style dishes.
