My grandma was born in Cape Verde, a beautiful island nation off the west coast of Africa. At the age of 16, she made the brave decision to immigrate to the United States in search of greater opportunities. Once in the U.S., she worked hard as a seamstress, perfecting her craft and dedicating herself to her work. Over time, she transformed her skills into a successful clothing sales business. Throughout her life, she raised five children who carry on her legacy, and she took great pride in her large family, which now includes 32 grandchildren and over 50 great-grandchildren. She sadly passed away on December 25, 2022. Her life, filled with rich experiences and love, spanned an incredible 104 years, during which she created lasting memories and touched the lives of many. As we celebrate her remarkable journey, we remember the warmth and strength she brought into our lives.
I was born in Cape Verde and immigrated to the United States when I was just eight years old, leaving behind my mother and the familiar comforts of home. With a heart full of hope and a sense of determination, I set out in search of a brighter future, not just for myself but for my entire family. This experience was a profound mix of fear and excitement as I navigated the unknown, driven by the dream of building a better life for my loved ones.
