My Grandfather (left) before immigration

My grandfather (Salvatore), pictured on the left, was born and raised in Giarre, Sicily. He has three sisters (from left to right) (sitting): Venera, Esther, and Carmela. Married my grandmother in Riposto, Sicily, in 1958. They then traveled by boat (pictured) to Ellis Island in 1959 to start a new life in America. They moved to Lawrence, MA, and my grandfather worked for the Naval Shipyard as a welder while my grandmother (Angela) was pregnant with my Uncle Joe. After some time, my grandmother and grandfather both ended up working at Southwick Clothing Factory, which was owned by the Grieco Brothers. They made clothes for the parent company, Brooks Brothers, which is famous for its suits. I think these two pictures are great for representing my family’s beginnings in the U.S. There is a lot from my culture, my family, and our Sicilian heritage. I value my Italian side very much because of the food, history, and struggles we went through to get to where we are now. It is fantastic to have such a rich history on my mother's side of my family.
