Pan Sabao
Pan sobao is a special bread in our family.
It’s a soft, slightly sweet bread from Puerto Rico, and it’s something we always enjoyed growing up. In my family, my grandmother was the one who would bring it home fresh from the bakery, and we’d all gather around the table to tear off pieces while it was still warm. One of my favorite memories is eating pan sobao with my mom and grandmother during our summer visits, and watching them enjoy it with their café con leche (coffee with milk).
Pan sobao is made with flour, yeast, sugar, salt, water, and a little shortening, and it’s kneaded until it gets that classic soft, stretchy texture before being baked to a light golden brown.
