painting by my grandma
my grandma immigrated from italy in 1957. she moved to the upper east side where she met my grandpa. she would paint people and landscapes from her hometown in italy called sicily, as a reminder of home. she was very into painting and created a profession out of it as an artist. she worked on sculptures, paintings, drawings, and more in the art studio in her apartment. when she had my mom, she continued to pursue art along with my grandpa who was also an artist. my mom grew up heavily influenced by art and the culture in italy, visiting every summer. my mom went on to become a food stylist, with my aunt being a singer and my cousin an actress. when I was young, my grandma always worked on art with me when I would come over, and those are some of my best memories with her. one piece of my grandma's art is in the smithsonian museum. even though she was surrounded by new york, my grandma never let the place she grew up and lived in leave her heart.
