Necklace

In Attire
Relationship: Child of im/migrant

This necklace was a gift from my mother's friend to my mother when she immigrated from Taiwan to the United States. The only person my mother knew who lived in the US was my father, who was also the reason why she decided to come to the US. The characters on the necklace are Chinese for "Good luck". Thrust in a foreign country, the only plan she had was to continue her education in order to fulfill her dream of having a better life here. For the first few years that my mother was here, she would look at this necklace as a reminder that she had friends and family, all of whom lived back in Taiwan, were thinking about her and wishing her good luck. Especially during the holidays, when the only person my mother could celebrate with was my dad, she used this necklace as a sign of hope and perseverance.
