Native Nigerian Clothes
Being Nigerian has really defined who I am as a person. But I can also define my culture with my clothes. My parents immigrated to the United States from Nigeria in 2002. My mother and father love clothes and fashion. Our family loves to wear bright and colorful clothes, more specifically Naija clothes. Naija clothes are known to be outstanding and draw lots of attention. Some of them are even popular with other African groups called dashikis. We wear these clothes in different ways for different occasions. I used to live in Nigeria when I was about 6 months old until I was three. And while I was there I can remember wearing the casual Nigerian wraps and other times wearing the fancy kintenge outfits for major parties and weddings. And I am very used to seeing my dad wearing the natives with agbadas, which are like shawls for men. Not only does this help express emotion, but it is also a way for me to connect with my native culture. After not being there in over a decade, it helps me remember where I truly came from and understand my roots. I hope to learn a lot more about my culture and tribe as I continue to get older.
