Nana's Recipe Box

My object is a recipe box that my Nana made for my mom and gave to her on her wedding day. The box is just wide enough to hold 3x5 index cards. The box was created by my Nana to gift my mom all of the recipes my Nana has used. She sat down and handwrote each of her recipes onto new index cards to gift to my mom. We have been using the enclosed recipes for many years when the holidays come around. Recipes have been a way for people to pass down their family’s history for many years. One of the recipes included in the box is nut brittle. The history of nut brittle dates back hundreds of years to Mesopotamia. This recipe has been loved by my family for many years. She loved cooking for us around the holidays, and we wouldn’t have many of her family classics if she hadn’t gifted my mother that recipe box. It’s been almost five years now since she passed away, and these recipes are now largely how we continue to remember her. We continue to bond over her memory as we strive to live up to the greatness she created with each dish. The box holds the key to our family’s history through cooking. These recipes are a way for me to continue to pass along the dishes that my dad loves, that I love, and hopefully, my children will love.
