Name Necklace: In my religion, this represents my name in a different language and aspect. In the Jewish religion, my Jewish name (Hanna) is essentially giving myself another soul. There are 2 souls in my religion. The 1st is me (Eva) and everything that I am but my 2nd soul embodies my jewish religion and everything that makes me a Jew. Two names, Two souls. In order to keep that soul “alive” it needs to be used. I often ask my friends to call me Hanna and plan to tell people that it is my name when I go to college. To be referred to as Hanna means a great deal to me. It reminds me how proud I am to have this religion in not only blood, but heart. When I went to synagogue and got my Jewish name officiated (seen by God) and how whole I felt in my heart.
Prayer Candles: Friday during sundown, the head woman in the household lights these candles and says a prayer for her children, spouse, and family. Depending on the amount of people in the family, varies on how many candles need to be lit. For my family in particular there are 4. One for me, one for my older brother, one for my mother and one for my father. There is a prayer you must first recite in Hebrew to ask God for anything. Whether it’s health, happiness, and wealth, or something as silly as a good grade on an important upcoming test. This means alot to me because when I sometimes feel things are out of my control, I feel comfort in looking to God and knowing that at the end of the day, everything will fall into place.
