My Oma’s Cast Iron Pan

This object is my Oma’s (a.k.a my great grandmother's) favorite cast iron pan. My Oma used this pan for just about everything. She has never owned a microwave so she used this pan to heat up all her food. She also used it to make many Hungarian dishes such as palacsintas filled with lekvar (crepes filled with prune butter), krumpen sveckle (potato and spaetzle), chicken paprikash (paprika chicken) and kipfles (jelly filled pastries). This pan was bought in the late 1950’s after my Oma and her mother immigrated to New York City from Hungary. This item is very important to me and my family because many generations have great memories of eating food that was cooked using it. This object and the food that was cooked on it helps my family to feel connected to our culture because food is a huge part of my family and it gives us a glimpse into what life may have been like for our ancestors. A few years ago my great grandmother gave it to my mom which was a very big deal because we all knew how much it meant to her and how much she cherished it. Although this pan may seem insignificant to some it has helped to connect me to my Oma in so many ways.
