Mortar and Pestle
My Mortar and Pestle
By Edie Tavarez
I am from Puerto Rico My grandma on my dads side is from Puerto Rico and my grandpa on my moms side is from Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico people call it a Pilon. My grandpa came to New York in the late 1960-1970. And he brought the pilon with him.
It is a wooden tool used in the kitchen to mash ingredients together. The mortar and pestle is used to crush nuts, garlic into a paste, smash ginger or chiles to infuse flavor, or grind whole spices into powders. You can also use the pilon to make guacamole. Why is this important to me because my grandmother passed it down to my dad and now we are using it in the kitchen.
It is connected to me because it is from Puerto Rico and I am from Puerto Rico.
