My Mom’s Sandalwood Sculpture
My object is a sandalwood sculpture from India . My mom immigrated to the US at the age of 19 for college. The sculpture is for decorative purposes, however it has a wonderful, sandalwood smell that reminds my mother of her home country, India. The intricate details of the sculpture including animals such as elephants and lions as well as a royal elephant rider reminds my Mother of the rich cultural heritage of India.
I chose this sculpture because it is an important reminder for my family of how unique, artistic and culturally rich our heritage is. The craftsmanship of the sandalwood sculptures is a miniature version of many historical monuments including temples across India that have existed for thousands of years.
I wonder if craftsmanship is still popular in India. I know that similar designs are carved on Old Indian temples. The next time I go to India I can't wait to see it for myself.
