The book

My family has moved around a lot. My parents immigrated with my eldest sister from Kerala, India to Spartansburg, South Carolina, where she had my other sister. We lived there for a few years, before moving to North Carolina, where I remember growing up. Somehow, along my mother’s whole journey, she kept a collection of recipes from all these places in this book. She wrote down recipes from our Italian neighbors, Indian, Sri Lankan, and Canadian relatives, southern family friends, and so many others. It’s a written collection of how she fed our family, where not one person is from the same place. I felt like this was the best representation of my story as an American because it’s a patchwork of all the cultures I was surrounded by growing up, one of the things my parents immigrated for me to have.
