My Grandmother's Tawa
My Grandmother's Tawa

The tawa is a type of pan used to make roti which is an Indian Bread similar to what you get in restaurants called naan. My grandmother bought this with her from Trinidad, when she migrated to the United States thinking that she was not going to find this type of pan. Turns out there are many of these available in America, however, it is a symbol of the journey that my grandmother made to America but did not want to lose her culture. In Trinidad culture is centered around food and holidays so I could understand why she felt important. My mom and her sisters still laugh that my grandmother put the tawa in her luggage with all of her clothes.
