My Father's Side
I am half Puerto Rican yet I look more like my mother's side of the family: the Norwegians. This photo shows my father, my uncle, and their parents (left to right). The children were born in Brooklyn but my grandparents immigrated here just before my uncle was born. When I hear stories of my father's childhood, Coney Island often comes out as a refuge. It was a place to go to have a little fun when times were tough. The 2017 storms left Puerto Rico as a shell of what it once was. The people are suffering and in need of a refuge. This photo serves as a reminder of that and gives a little insight into my family's earlier days on Coney Island.
