My father's ring
My name is Gerardo Albornoz, I am from Venezuela, I came to New York on May 25, 2016, I am a student at the ESOL Immigrant Service Program at Sunnyside Community Services. My arrival in this country was quite emotional and particular. I was waiting for my best friend at home and at the same time, I was walking on the floor of the City that I had in my dreams for many years. Little by little doing tourism I began to see possibilities to be able to try opportunities and study English.
I only arrived with a suitcase with the little clothes only what was necessary. Leaving literally everything alone I managed to bring with me a ring from my father who gave me a lot of love while I was alive and I know that wherever he is he will be watching my steps. A small family symbol that has a meaning inside beyond its economic value, I see in it a reflection of me and my whole family; proving to myself that we are unique in the world that we have particular beliefs, traditions and personalities, that even being far from our place. I have learned in my experience as an immigrant that each being is different and unique. My country for years adopted many citizens of any country in the world in search of opportunities, now I am living that reality on the other side; I will take care and practice while I can the celebrations, commemorations and traditional that I bring within me; showing them to others so they can know and value the roots where I come from.
