Musical Saw
My blind uncle, Rev. Daniel, immigrated to New York with his mom (my grandma Grace) in the early 1970s to help look after us grandchildren. He also joined the congregation at the Chinese Methodist Church where his brother Moses was a pastor. Not only did my family carry over from Hong Kong their love for Jesus but also their love for music. My uncle Daniel brought his musical saw with him from China to Hong Kong then to American and, for as long as I could remember, would play one of his favorite hymns, Amazing Grace, at different churches around Chinatown. He also had the opportunity to perform on this unique instrument at Columbus park for the Chinese community.
