The object I picked is the MUM water bottle brand from Bangladesh. On my recent visit to Bangladesh -my home country-, this was the only water I drank, as it was very close to the water in the U.S. I already had an idea of how privileged my life in the U.S. was, just by looking at the slums built with metal sheets, but the water quality was the biggest indicator. In NYC specifically, the water quality is usually good, and tap water is typically safe to drink. The water quality in Bangladesh however was really poor. The taste was muddy, and even water bottle brands (aside from MUM) that I’ve tried tasted similar. I was only a bit past one when I immigrated, and that was due to winning a green card lottery to the U.S. which means, I don't know how it feels to live with these conditions for life. The only thing I had as a reference, was a sample of the poor quality of life in the summer that I was there on my visit.
It was only recently that I decided to do research on how poor the water quality was. 69% of the population don’t have access to safe drinking water and the water already has high levels of arsenic. I sometimes wonder if anything will be done about the water quality, as that does kill millions of people per year.
