Moon Cakes 月饼
There are a lot of Chinese holidays throughout the entire year. One of the important holiday is called Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节), it's on the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar with full moon at night. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, my family would get together, celebrate this holiday, enjoy the glorious full moon and eat moon cakes. Traditional moon cakes will have an imprint on top, consisting of the Chinese characters for "reunion" or "harmony" as well as the name of the bakery, the filling in the moon cake and imprints of the moon. Moon cakes were made with different ingredients, most popular ones are made with melon seeds, lotus seeds, almonds. My favorite ones are the lotus seed paste moon cakes. They taste delicious, and brings people joy and pleasure. Inside of them they are stuffed with thick lotus seed paste and sometimes even have one or two cooked egg yolks. Outside is a thin layer of round bread crust in dark brown, brown or yellow color. Moon cakes are offered between friends or on family gatherings while celebrating the festival, moon cakes symbolize reunion and jointly, the round shape of it represent full and completeness, that's why most Chinese families would be gathering together and celebrate together by eating moon cakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
