I have chosen to use a photo of my maternal great-grandfather since my family does not have any heirlooms. He was born and raised in Jamaica and was a construction worker. Although he was born in Jamaica, both his parents were Panamanian. They chose to have him in Jamaica because they had other family members from there. He went on to have six children in Jamaica, and the last one was my grandmother. About five years after my grandma was born, my great-grandfather immigrated to America in pursuit of a better-paying job for his large family.  He would send money back to Jamaica after finding a job to help pay for his family's needs. He had a heart attack after some years and died in New York before the rest of his family could come and live here as well. His wife, my great-grandmother, decided to immigrate to Philadelphia to continue working as a nursing assistant, and left her children in the care of her mother back in Jamaica. The eldest of the six chose to come up and move to Texas in about 1988 to also work in the hospital/nursing home scene. My grandmother later followed in 1993, settling in New York and working as a home health aide. My mom came 3 years later to do primary & high school, after my grandmother filed for her. Hearing of the available job opportunities and spacious housing, the rest of my grandmother's sisters followed suit to immigrate further north to places including Canada, New Jersey, and New York. They gained more in education and got jobs in health-related fields, just like their mother, and all had their children here in America.
