Masmada
One of the most important things that we use in the Yemeni culture is Masmada. The Masmada is a handmade basket made from straws and then painted to make it look colorful. It is specially used in the holidays when people come to visit you. They put cookies and bread in it in front of the guests as they come to visit family members. My mom had one Masmada which she got from her mom specially made for her. It is very special to her because it reminds her of my grandmother. It is also very important to me because it reminds me of the holidays and the good days which family members come to visit. Also it reminds me of my grandmother and the old culture where they use the Masmada lot. My mother has had it since she got married and she still has it in our house in Yemen. We do have one Masmada here in America that we bought, but it doesn't look as good as the one we have in Yemen and it doesn’t have the same value. The one back home was specially made for my mother while the one we bought here was just bought for daily use.
