Martisoare

Relationship: Child of im/migrant

My Mom is an immigrant from Moldova. This object is a Martisoare, it is used when a holiday called Martisorul is celebrated in the country of Moldova. Martisorul takes places the whole month of March. Martisorul celebrates the beginning of spring. Martisoare has grass on the top with purple flowers. Underneath this there are green leaves. In the middle there is a golden thread that ties everything together into a bow. Below that are two read and white threads. Attached together below these threads are more flowers. These flowers are both white and red in color. During holidays it is a big event to wear this bow to represent that country’s tradition and culture. My mother brought this items to America when she came here to settle down.My Mom came to live in Brooklyn, New York in 2004 because her husband lived here. Most of her life she lived in Moldova. She felt sad to leave her country because her friends and family are still over there. She loves her country still. She is also happy that she lives here because everything is more advanced and is thrilled to be a part of American culture, as well. I want my mother to continue to remember her traditions and celebrate the new ones in this country as well.
