Maria moved to the United States from the Dominican Republic in 1983. In 2017, after her daughter’s death, she decided to open a non-profit organization to help families in need. She started by herself in a corner of her apartment. She used to cook meals and distributed to homeless individuals in a park and train stations near her house. Then, she began to make and sell desserts and organized events such as brunches and bingo afternoons to make profit. She then used that money to buy toys and clothes for children and medicine for elderly people. As the organization grew bigger, she started to trave lo countries such as Honduras, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. During her travels, she visited families and help them with their needs, including repairing their homes, buying school supplies for kids, or providing prescriptions for people who could not afford them. Additionally, she expanded the organization to include a dedicated brach to support youth struggling with depression and anxiety. What she started by herself now has become a group of over 20 people. Through this work, Maria has become a powerful community leader. This magazine was the first magazine they ever made, and it represent the growth of this organization. It documents all the activities, events, and people this organization helped.
Audio: The mission of Camino Hacia la Luz is to help young people, the elderly, and children. Specifically young people who are struggling with depression and anxiety. This is where the organization focuses more on: on young people who are going through difficult times.
