Lefse dough, paddle, griddle and roller.

I choose this object because of its significance in my family’s lives. The reason that this paddle matters so much to me is because of the memories connected to it. My family has a tradition where our extended family on my mother’s side comes together to make Lefse. Lefse is made when a potato based dough is evenly sized as the others and rolled out while using flour to make it not stick. After it is rolled out, you take the Lefse paddle, a flat and skinny paddle made from wood and slide it underneath the rolled out dough then place it on a flat griddle to have it turn a golden-brown. After awhile you use the paddle to check the side facing down and when it’s to your liking you flip it. Having these get togethers always brings me and my family joy, along with yet another reason to see each other. Lefse is my favorite food; it’s a soft flatbread that tastes slightly sweet and buttery. You can add all sorts of toppings on it; there is much space for creative liberty. My family started this tradition for two reasons: our love for Lefse and our Norwegian heritage. My family migrated from Norway many decades ago to MN.
