This is the first pollera that my parents got me from Ecuador in 2007. When my parents immigrated to the United States, my mother stopped wearing a pollera as she was modernized by western culture. Around the 16-1700s, Spain conquered Latin America and the pollera was implemented within multiple cultures. The pollera originated in other countries before it reached the Incan empire.  Women would use the pollera for work because of its comfort, but it was also an indication of one's wealth depending on the amount of embroidery on the skirt.
