Korean Linen Chest
My mom’s side of the family is Korean, however, we have lost many Korean traditions when my grandparents moved to America. One of the few traditions we have kept on to is the “first birthday celebration”. In this celebration, babies are dressed up in special linen outfits that are only used for them on that one date and the entire family comes over for the celebration over dinner. Until these celebrations, the linen is stored in a chest made of wood up. It is one of the last reminders of my Korean culture and my heritage. My grandfather immigrated from North Korea when he was a young boy, and this was one of the only traditions that he brought over. We have celebrated this tradition every time a new baby is born in the family and will continue for as long as our family grows.
