Kimono bag
My object is a bag that is made out of a kimono dress. A kimono dress is a traditional japanese dress that is worn when you turn 20 years old. The reason behind this is because when you turn 20 you can vote, drink, and marry without parental consent. This is a symbol of becoming an adult. Another time you can wear kimono dresses is when you are 3,5 and 7 to celebrate the marks of these ages. A long time ago there was no food, shelter, safety, or medical attention so a lot of children would die before the age of 3,5 and 7 so wearing a kimono dress when you turn 3,5 and 7 is important. Traditional kimono dresses are made out of hemp, linen, silk, silk brocade, silk crepes and satin weaves. Modern kimono dresses are made out of less expensive easy care fabrics such as rayon, cotton satin, cotton, polyester and other synthetic fibers. When my mom turned 20 she wore this kimono dress and my grandmother turned her kimono dress into a bag so my mom can carry it wherever she goes. My grandmother made this bag specifically when my mom was coming to America because she couldn't bring the whole dress. This was a way of remembering Japan and leaving for America with a piece of Japan always with her. This bag represents coming of age, growing up, maturing and family. This bag is important to me because it shows the journey my family went through.
