Kiddush Cup
My item is a Kiddush cup. It is made out of silver with little engravings on it and is anywhere from 130-150 years old. The Kiddush cup is used during many Jewish Holidays but this one is no longer being used but our family keeps it out always and displays it. This attaches me to my religion because I remember one of the first times I actually drank out of a Kiddush cup was during my Bar Mitzvah, one of the most important days of my Jewish life. This Kiddush cup was passed down in my Dad’s family and my Dad and I aren’t completely sure but we think that it was once my Great-Great Grandfathers. My Dad’s family moved to America in the late 1800s because of Religious persecution in Russia. They could take very little things and if they got caught taking a religious item it would be confiscated. They somehow sneaked the Kiddush Cup into America and it's been in the family ever since. It represents Resilience because a few years ago when hurricane Sandy happened the Kiddush cup was in the basement. Everything in the basement was destroyed. Except for the Kiddush cup. My Dad found it on the street, it was banged up and bent a bit but it was in one piece. I am proud to have this Kiddush cup in my home because of all the things it went through and for what it means to me.
