The summer of 2014 was the first time I went to my mother's homeland, The Dominican republic. It was when I finally got to meet my mother's side of the family. As the time for my flight back to New York one of my uncles handed me a keychain he had gotten for me. It was one of the only things I can bring back to New York and remember my trip. This artifact is special to me not only because it is an item that is from my first trip to the D.R. but it also reminds me of how far my mother has come to create a better life for me and my sister in the United States. Also if she had never immigrated to the U.S. she would have never met my father and had me. I carry that keychain wherever I go whether it is on my purse it has my keys because to me it represents a part of who I am and shows others a little fact about me.
