Medium sized wooden box with painting.

This was my great-great-grandmother’s (on my mothers side) jewelry box. This jewelry box was used to store her necklaces, bracelets and watches. It is made out of wood and was painted by my great-great-great-grandfather for my great-great-grandmother. She received this box for her sixteenth birthday from my great-great-great-grandfather (her father). My great-great-grandmother got married a couple years later to my great-great-grandfather, who was an immigrant from Italy. My great-great-grandmother was also Italian, but she was not an immigrant, she was born in the U.S. They had four kids; two daughters and two sons. She kept it until her first daughter turned 16, and gave it to her as a birthday present. Then it was passed on to my great-grandmother, who passed it to my grandmother, who then gave it to my mother. It is tradition to pass on this jewelry box on for your first daughters sixteenth birthday. My mother told me about this tradition when I was younger, and I was always so excited to get it when I’m 16. This box is kept on my mothers drawer and contains old jewelry from my grandmother. When I receive it, it will have old jewelry from my grandmother and my mother which will then be passed on to my daughter with their old jewelry and my jewelry too. In this way, when they pass on I will have their jewelry as a piece of them.
