Indian/American Flag

This half-American, half-Indian flag represents my family and where I come from. The top half stands for my American side, and the bottom half shows my Indian side. It all started when my Indian mom and American dad got married on October 23, 1999. When they got married it wasn’t really common in either of their families to marry outside their culture. There isnt many mixed relatives in my family even today.

After they got married they had three kids, with me being the youngest.  Growing up in a mixed family was different but it allowed me to feel belonged and be able to fit in, in two very different cultures and places.. Sometimes we would celebrate Indian holidays like Diwali with my mom’s side, and also American ones like Thanksgiving and Christmas with my dad’s side. Some of my best memories is at my lake house when we would have both of our cultures together to have one big party. At home we did things from both sides but mainly just American things because more of my dads side was around here and was easier to get together..

This flag means a lot because it shows how both sides of my family are connected. It’s not just where my parents are from, but about how their cultures went together to make our family. It also represents immigration, because my mom’s family moved here from India in 1980. Some of her relatives were already living here in the U.S. and they saw that it was a good opportunity for a better life. That move ended up changing a lot, and changed our whole family dynamic.
