My great grandma May and her sisters

My great grandma May who I was named after (pictured second to the right with arms crossed) came from Poland looking for better opportunities and better quality of life. This picture was taken right before she got on a boat to come to the United States. She was looking for an escape from the persecution and negative treatment towards Jews. She was 10 or 11 when she immigrated, which must have been terrifying. Her father went first to the United States to get a home and a decent job. When she came, she was greeted by a tiny apartment. She had a huge family so it must have been really crowded. Even though I never got to meet her, my mom tells me stories about her that help me imagine what she was like. I’m proud to be named after this fierce woman.
