House of Slaves
My family on my dad’s side is Africans from the country of Senegal. My ancestors were brought from their homeland and took to the Goree islands where they were then shipped to America. This place is testament to my beginnings. The House of Slaves held many slaves for 3 months before they were shipped to America in horrible conditions. Some of my family were taken as slaves and sent to America but for the most part they were able to stay in Senegal. I have many relatives in this world that I most likely don’t know of because they were sent off to America and had to start new lives. The House of Slaves will always be a testament to what my ancestors went through and I will never forgot about the hard times they went through to help me get to where I’m at now. The House of Slaves is visible today at the Goree islands. When you step foot in there, you can feel the trauma and the despair that the Africans felt. This place doesn’t make me who I am but it makes me realize where I come from and to never forget my roots.
