Great Grandma's Blankets
My great grandma loved to create and share. I own three of her hand-crocheted blankets, made from soft and colorful yarn. There is a blue blanket that lays on my couch, there is a pink one that I keep on my bed, and there is a green one covered in yarn replicas of daisies that I keep on my windowside bench. The designs that my great grandma created into these blankets are intricate and beautiful and I use all of them constantly.I have grown up with these blankets, first in my great grandmother’s home, and then in my own bed. The blankets aren’t just blankets to me, they are hours upon hours of hard work and effort that my great grandma put into making them and it means a lot to me to own a piece that she spent a large amount of her energy and time on. It makes me happy to have evidence of my great grandma’s creativity because I can relate it to my own. I myself crochet and sew just like she did and knowing that we have these things in common make me feel closer to her.I know it is a cliché thing for your great grandma to crochet or knit but that also that there are so many others out there who probably have objects similar to mine and have beautiful connections to those objects. Something to know is that my great grandma was very connected to her Swedish heritage, as her father immigrated to the U.S. from Sweden in 1918. Since crocheting was very popular in Sweden, I think that maybe she learned the art to connect to her culture and learn those traditions.
