This belt was my grandpa’s, even though I never got to meet him. It’s made of dark brown leather that looks really strong and kind of worn from being used a lot. I assume he just wore this in high school, maybe to football games, school events, or just every day to class. When I look at it, I try to imagine what he was like as a teenager. The worn leather and the shineless  buckle, make me imagine it has a story behind it. Even though it’s just a belt, it means a lot to me because it’s something real that belonged to him. I don’t have memories of my grandpa, but I have this belt. It makes me feel connected to him in a small way. It also represents the deep roots my family has embedded in Ilwaco. It represents the many generations of my family that have graduated from Ilwaco High.
