Grandmother’s Art
During the late 70’s, my grandmother and her 2 kids left Peru to escape the economic stagnation and came to Dallas, TX. When she arrived, she couldn’t communicate with anybody and didn’t know anyone but my grandfather. I remember her telling me how hard it was to buy groceries, not being able to read the labels. One passion she brought with her to the U.S. was art. My grandmother, growing up very religious, made beautiful icons of saints and angels. Her art talents eventually even got her a job working as an art and Spanish teacher at the school my father went to. Now every time I go to my grandmother’s house, we make art, and I think of this story.
