Grandma Pat's Piano

Our piano in the office

I’ve been taking piano lessons since I was four years old. I’ve played on the same old, out of tune piano for my whole life. It’s an upright piano made of warm brown wood. It once lived in my great uncle’s mom’s house, who was called Grandma Pat. Though we aren’t related by blood, my mom says that she was a warm, kind, generous, and talkative soul. She had this piano in her apartment until the end of her life, and I’ve heard that when she had the windows open, you could hear her playing through the window. She loved to play, and when she passed in 2008, she wanted her piano to go to someone in the family who would enjoy it. Her children asked my mom if she wanted it because her and her sisters felt like extra grandchildren to Grandma Pat, so my parents took it to our old house where it lived in the dining room until we moved in 2018. It’s now in the office where my sister and I play it almost every day. I love to sit with a single light illuminating the keys, letting my fingers make the music. Music is a really important part of our family and this piano holds a lot of memories and countless hours of practice. My mom said, “It was really important to me that you and [my sister] had the opportunity to make music.”
