Grandma May's Favorite Flower
My great-grandmother, Kathleen May, was the matriarch of our family. She was a spunky and strong woman born in the midst of the Great Depression. She worked as a teen in Michigan during WWII to make flight jackets for pilots. Her life led her back to West Virginia where she settled down. Her strong will and independence led her to raising 6 children and 1 grandchild. As a child I watched her garden and tend to flowers outside each spring. She treasured her ability to bring plants to life. The Crepe Myrtle Tree she tended to each year was her favorite above all else. As an adult, I planted a seed for her favorite tree and each year I am reminded of her.
