Jacques was born in Paris, France and joined the war only about 20 years later to fight for Frances freedom. He was soon captured and brought first to a Prisoner of war camp. However, when they found out he was Jewish he was sent to Dachau, where he befriended a German doctor who helped him devise a plan to help him escape. Jacques impersonated a German officer with meningitis, causing him to be sent “back” to Germany. He jumped off the train about halfway there and worked for a few years to take a freedom train to the usa. There, he joined the army once again and went on to defend the usa, even helping with Dday and soon after starting his own family. - The object shows how hard Jacques fought to be free and get his future family into the safety of the USA. It shows his determination, and dedication to to his country and family, even after everything that happened. It shows that even after all he had been through he was proud.
- It says that you don’t have to come from America to be truly patriotic. If you have a dream, and a plan to make it happen anyone is welcome. It also emphasizes our level of bravery as a country. Men like Jacques who came from war and continued to fight for a country they had never been to before are truly amazing.
- The story has a theme of equality through friendship- even though Jacques and the German doctor were thought to be enemies, they joined allied forces.
