Gold necklace
I watched a video by Laila Halaby, and her object was a ring that her parents gave to her when she was a baby.
My object is a gold necklace my parents gave me on my tenth birthday. It is a gold pendant hanging from a red string. This necklace is important to me because it represents my culture. In China, you give your child a necklace with a silver pendant on a red string to wish them longevity. Usually the pendant will have “长命锁” (longevity lock) engraved in it. The color red represents good fortune. When the child turns ten, you give them the same necklace with a gold charm. This gives them good luck. I remember on my tenth birthday when I received the gold necklace and I felt incredibly grown-up. I felt so proud of myself. I’ve worn it ever since, and I almost never take it off. It’s also a sort of comfort object to me, like if I’m stressed or nervous, just the feel of the pendant against my skin will calm me. This necklace connects me with my culture and brings me good fortune.
