Glass Orb by A.S.
During summer, on Block Island, a glassblower hides glass orbs. They are in trees and paths on hiking trails. Everyone goes on an epic search for orbs. People search with sticks and push aside branches, leaves, and poison ivy to find the little glass orbs. It is precarious work; there are thorns, poison ivy, and ticks latch onto you burrowing into your skin. It can be grueling. The orbs are fist-sized. My family goes to Block Island searching for orbs year after year. On trails, we asked people if they found orbs and people said, “Oh no, not yet” or “yes on __ trail.” We once saw a huge determined family searching on a hike we were starting, so we decided to go on a different hike. After three years of searching tirelessly, something amazing happened. It rained the night before, and no one was out early but us. We were determined to find an orb and went to Rodman’s Hollow trail. I decided to look for an orb in a beautiful huge tree. I looked in a part of the tree and saw something shiny. It took me a second to realize I found an orb! I felt mischievous, so I pulled a little prank on my parents. I told my parents, who were waiting for me up ahead, that I didn’t find one. I walked up to them with hands behind my back and pulled the orb out. My hands were shaking so much because I was afraid to drop it; after all, it is made of glass. I am so glad I found it. And now, ever since I found it, we have it displayed in our living room. I feel pride whenever I see it.
